Portraits painted with words

Take a look at these fine images made by John Sokol (b. 1947). We absolutely love the way he combined the author with his or hers written works by painting their portrait using their own words.

John Keats as Lamia

Samuel Beckett as as waiting for Godot

Walt Whitman as Leaves of grass

Two sides of every body

Gracia Hagen (self-taught artist from Chicago) took some wonderful photos of different models from two very different perspectives. One of them sowing them off the models as pretty as ever and the other one showing the same body but from a less fortunate position, or? The point is very different!

Gracia Hagen wants us to understand that every person can look extremely attractive under the right circumstances and two seconds later transform into something completely different.

The series 'Illusions of the body' was made to tackle the supposed norms of what we think our bodies are supposed to look like. Now she even turned the pictures into a book.

Most of us realize that the media displays only the prettiest photos of people, yet we compare ourselves to those images. We never get to see those photos juxtaposed against a picture of that same person looking unflattering. That contrast would help a lot of body image issues we as a culture have.

Make a difference with craftivism

Ever heard of craftivism? It's neat and also the center in a new and very illustrated book from author Sarah Corbett. For many years Sarah was an activist ... who ended up being a burned out activist.

Changing her perspective she still wanted to make a difference but by using a different voice. The voice of craftivism (Originally Betsy Greer's term which means activism through craft). It became the heart and drive behind The little book of Craftivism.
It seems to me...
The little book of craftivism is a small how-to become a craftivist guide and also the story of Sarah making a difference herself and telling her story.

Sarah hosts an online community - Craftivist Collective - and updates the blog.

Constant euphoria

Henri-Robert-Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) was a French artist and cultural critic. Along his lifetime he said some great things about being and living like a creative person.

We salute him with this blackboard with some of his words.

Notes

Using notebooks is the perfect way to remember your thoughts. Get inspired by the famous author Paul Auster (the husband of Siri Hustvedt starring Stella No. 2).
He explains his writing habits right here

"I do have a few unusual writing habits—I'm a dinosaur now. I write everything by hand and type it up on an old manual typewriter, an Olympia 1961 ... I've never been able to compose on a keyboard. I need a pen or a pencil in my hand, feel that it's a very physical activity. When I write, words are literally coming out of my body." Paul Auster

Furthermore these notebooks are so beautiful you almost can't get enough.

Luella´s Guide

Luella´s Guide to English Style is a beautiful book made by the British designer Luella Bartley. Stella love the cover that has an old school look with a neon pink elastic band to seal it - a really nice combination. Luella shares her inspiration and the book is full of beautiful drawings by Zoe Taylor and pictures of different icons and styles. You can buy the book here.
