Latest EP by Tiger Baby. Meet lead singer Pernille Pang

Last year (2013) Tiger Baby released the wonderful EP 'Alone'. It's a result of the band's new approach to their music and collaboration. Back then Stella had a talk with lead singer Pernille Pang who you might already know as editor of Stella Magazine. It's time for sharing! Read the interview and then listen to the EP (or do it the other way around).

Alone

-What’s on your mind to day?
I’m writing a book at the moment and have to hand the whole manuscript in to the publisher very soon; so that’s pretty much what’s occupying me.

-Who is Tiger Baby?
Benjamin Teglbjærg, Nikolaj Tarp Gregersen and me. We’ve been a band for ages and met when we we’re all studying at the university of Copenhagen and Benjamin and Nikolaj put a note up on a black board at the university. They we’re looking for a singer to join their band, and I responded. Now – many years, three albums and an EP later – we’re still here, but our lives have changed a lot. We all have families and jobs, but still strive to make music.

-What is your next project?
Benjamin is very busy at his job and needs a break from making music, so Nikolaj and I will do a duo-project. No one knows where it will lead us, but I’m pretty exited about it. Also, I’m going to give birth to my second daughter in December. That’s a pretty exiting project too. (This interview was conducted in 2013. Pernille now has a lovely newborn daughter.)

-Have you always wanted to be an artist?
Yes, a kind of artist, I guess. As I child I was always jumping around in my room imitating Madonna and the like, pretending to be a pop star. Later on I wanted to be a designer, then a photographer and a journalist. I ended up being both a journalist and a singer, which I’m very content with.

-What or Who inspires you and why?
Daily life. Ups and downs. And the melancholy of fall. But I also get really inspired by going to concerts. Listening to other musicians and bands.

-Are you in Love?  In a place, a person, a moment or something else?
I’m very much in love with my family and the new apartment, which we just moved into. I’ll never fall out of love with my four-year-old daughter, Stella. She’s the greatest love of all.

- What time of the day is your favorite?
It used to be in the night. When everything was quiet, most people were asleep and creativity was flowing. But that was before I had children. Now I’m too tired in the evenings and nights, and I think actually prefer mornings alone with a cup of coffee in front of the computer.

- What is your favorite dessert and Why?
In general I just love desserts. If I have to pick one it would be the classic Thai dish ‘Sticky rice and mango’

- What is your best summer memories from your childhood? why?
When I was visiting my grandparents in the north of Jutland. I remember those summers as being really sunny and warm with trips to the beach and walks in the forest - bicycling along yellow grain fields, picking strawberries and peas from my grandparent’s garden.

- Where do you get your energy from?
From inspiration and creativity.

 - What do you do on a rainy day?
I stay inside - making puzzles, cuddling up with my daughter, reading books.

- What do you dream about?
Adventures in Asia. And long, healthy and happy lives for every member in my family.

- What makes you laugh?
My daughter and my husband. And little things with no logic at all.

- What is your favorite place in the world?
The beautiful temple in Hong Kong, where my dad’s urn is situated. I love to spend time there alone. The heavy smell of incense and the quiet sound of running water from a small fountain.

- The best advice someone has giving you, and follow it?
It’s very cliché and I don’t know if anyone ever gave it to me or I just got it from an American movie. But you can do what you want if you just believe in yourself. I’m not sure, I always follow this advice, but I would like to. My boyfriend often tells me to stop my complaining and do something about it instead. I guess, that’s pretty good advice too.

A blessed unrest

Martha Graham (1894-1991) was an American modern dancer and choreographer. Not only was she an active dancer for more than seventy years. She also said some beautiful things about being an artist. So all you Stellamag followers with a creating spark in you; may this inspire your weekend.

"No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissastifaction; a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others."

Everyone has arrived

We all do it from time to time (well, maybe mostly us above thirty (B.I. = Before Instagram)). We open the photo album and dive into the past by watching old memories unfold.

We remember emotions, friendships, relations and people that have passed away. It’s somehow the same feeling with the new book "Alle er kommet – portraits and parties 1983-2013" (UK: Everyone has arrived) by Sigrún Gudbrandsdóttir.

Palace Pier , Brighton 1993. Camden 1992. Symi 1990.
The pictures are portraits and party photos in the timespan 1983-20013, mainly with Sigrún behind the camera. Weddings and friends goofing around, backstage giggling and night swimming. What is not to like? Almost 400 pages.

Jim & Sigrún Prague 1990
You may not know the people on the pictures except the few ones you've seen in the media - and so Sigrún's story becomes the story of the reader. The story of you. Years and places that have made a mark, places and people you knew during the same years, clothing trends or stereotypes you’ve meet in the street. Atmospheres... Lovestories. You name it.

Morten & Jonas Skindergade 1991
During the two next Fridays we’ll be presenting a few of the photos and stories from the book to light your fire.

Read more about the writer, photographer and artist Sigrún and her book on her website (DK). You may even want to get your own copy. Last but not least, stay tuned here on the blog You’re invited.

CPH:DOX | Andrew Bird: Fever Year

Innumerable Santa hats, free beer streaming plentifully from the back of horse drawn carts, the occupants merrily united in song. Downtown Copenhagen is teeming with inebriated folk celebrating the launch of Tuborg’s annual Christmas brew. It is J-Day – the infamous date in Denmark’s calendar when one should be prepared to witness the unthinkable. And that we did.

Buried in a cosy cinema below the revelry, fifteen or so strangers were greeted with birdsong. In her directorial debut, Xan Aranda captures the essence of Andrew Bird’s creative evolution, and that of the man himself. She chases the feverish virtuoso through the final months of a gruelling yearlong tour, all the while he chases the ghost. Bird steadfastly believes that the evolution of his music is imperative to its survival, likening the process to that in the animal kingdom. His rigorous fifteen-year touring career is a testament to this.

Bird is satisfied on stage; here his music exists in a malleable state, free of the constraints inherent in the recording process. A lingering fear of repetition repeatedly thrusts him back onto the touring circuit where, he explains, his songs regain elasticity and his shows exist as shared moments privy to only those present. Clearly such a whirlwind lifestyle does have its drawbacks; true to the title Bird was afflicted with a perpetual fever for the duration of the tour. 165 shows later, and on crutches, Bird returns to the family farm to reclaim himself, to play for the sheer joy of playing, free of pressure, free of expectations.

In 'Andrew Bird: Fever Year', Aranda has eloquently pieced together a poetic masterpiece for the senses. Not only has she gifted Bird’s ever-faithful audience with insight, but more importantly, a shared memory. Bird, who owns all of the commercial rights, has no plans to show the documentary beyond the festival circuit.

And so we rejoin the festivities, whistling.
